Vermont South Special

Hi and welcome to the Vermont South Special School relief teacher podcast. We have put this together to help you make the most of your day and enjoy your time with our students!

So let’s get started!

Classes commence at 8.55 so you will need to be at the school no later than 8.20, particularly if you have not been to Vermont Special before. This will give you time to sign-in and prepare for the day. Please aim to be punctual. You are welcome to park in the school car park or there is plenty of street parking around the school. Just be aware of the parking restrictions and do not park directly in front of the school where the buses park.

The dress code is smart casual; avoid open-toe shoes and it is best not to wear necklaces or other similar jewellery.

Once parked head to the school office to sign in. You will be given a brief induction to the school and be shown to your classroom. A CRT folder will be available for you in the classroom and contains plenty of useful information on

  • Your daily timetable
  • Yard duty and
  • A photo of every child in your class along with any relevant information.

You will also be introduced to one of our education support staff who will work alongside you during the day. Our support staff are an indispensable resource and will be invaluable as you prepare and teach throughout the day. Please introduce yourself as a priority and learn as much as you can about the class and routines before the day begins.

Please make sure you mark the roll first thing in the morning and then again after lunch. Your education support colleague will be able to assist you with this.

Student work for the day will be available in the classroom. Please complete the work as suggested. This should make your day more enjoyable as the children will be familiar with the routines and their current work. If you have any queries about the work please ask one of your support colleagues. Please provide students with feedback as they complete their work throughout the day and collect it for the teacher once completed. If students are using digital resources at any time during the day please remember these are for work tasks only and you will need to monitor this use.

You will be informed early if you are on yard duty. Please collect a Hi-Viz vest and bumbag and ensure you are in the correct area. Be prepared to move around your area and monitor the safety of the children. And make sure you carry your mobile in case it is required.

You will find the students at Vermont South Special enthusiastic and keen to learn, and if you take a similar approach you are most likely to have a good day.

You are encouraged to participate in the school ticket system that rewards students for positive behaviour. Please speak to your colleagues for assistance in this area.

If you do encounter any significant behavioural issues and require assistance please use the classroom phone to call 231 or 261. One of our redirection aids will then come to your class to assist.

Classes are dismissed at 3.05. You will then need to go to your assigned bus line to mark a roll and walk students safely to their bus. Ensure the classroom is neat and tidy and all doors and windows are locked. Please turn off all computers, heaters etc and if furniture has been moved during the day please return it to its original position.

At the end of the day please complete a handover page. Tradewind have one available or you can simply write your own. Let the teacher know what work was covered, what needs to be followed up and how well the children worked throughout the day.

Be aware that many children travel to and from school by bus. Please speak to your support colleague if you are unsure of the arrangement at the end of the day.

Before leaving the school please visit the office to sign out. We look forward to seeing you at Vermont South Special School and hope you enjoy your day with us.
