About the Role:

Are you a passionate and empathetic educator with a heart for supporting students with additional needs? Do you believe in the power of music and movement to inspire learning, growth, and connection?

Tradewind is seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to lead the Performing Arts program (Music and Movement) for Primary to Senior Secondary students in a specialist setting, starting immediately.

This full-time, ongoing role involves teaching small classes of high-needs students who are working at the beginning levels of the Victorian Curriculum. You'll play a vital role in creating inclusive, engaging lessons that foster creativity, confidence, and connection through the arts.

Key Duties:

  • Develop and deliver highly structured, accessible Performing Arts lessons (music, movement, drama) aligned with the Victorian Curriculum Levels A-F, using sensory-rich and multi-modal approaches tailored to individual student needs.
  • Use ongoing, individualised assessment strategies to track progress in communication, engagement, and creative expression, providing clear reports and feedback to families and support teams.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and highly supportive environment that encourages participation, emotional regulation, and expression through structured and predictable routines.
  • Facilitate small-scale, student-centred performances and classroom-based showcases that celebrate student strengths, often incorporating assistive technology and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
  • Support or lead modified extracurricular arts-based programs, including music groups or movement sessions, with a focus on building confidence, communication, and motor skills.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers, therapists, and support staff to integrate Performing Arts into IEP goals and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Manage the planning and delivery of performances, with a focus on accessibility and sensory needs-liaising with support staff and carers to ensure inclusive participation.

Skills & Experience:

  • Must have unrestricted working rights in Australia
  • Must have current VIT registration
  • Previous experience in a Special Development schools advantageous
  • A warm, nurturing approach and a strong understanding of special education
  • A creative mindset and a belief in the power of movement, music and self expression
  • Experience (or a keen interest) in working with students with diverse learning needs including students that are non-verbal
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • A collaborative spirit and a growth mindset
  • Ability to provide contact details for two education-based references from within the last 5 years (student-teacher mentors are acceptable).

Offering:

  • Full time, fixed term contract beginning early June
  • Work within a small and supportive Specialist team
  • An opportunity to tour the school prior to full application
  • Salary based on experience- $78k-$116k
