Job Description

The role:

The Social Worker will utilise evidence informed therapeutic approaches to people accessing the Cairns Health Centre with mental health and/or alcohol and other drugs challenges, their families, carers and supporters.

The social worker will apply their knowledge at an individual and systemic level to provide appropriate assessment and intervention to treat mental health conditions, and facilitate sessions with individuals, groups, and families.

Groups will be developed using a co-design approach. The social worker provides direct clinical treatment to people accessing the service including short and long-term care. They will ensure that psychological assessment and interventions are responsive to the needs of people accessing the Centre.

Clinical interventions will be integrated with and complemented by wellbeing supports, peer support, care coordination and mutual self-help supports.

Responsibilities:Provide comprehensive and flexible therapeutic support services to people including an advanced level of assessment, brief intervention, treatment planning and evaluation. 

Deliver mental health interventions that can be adapted to meet the unique and individual needs of the person.

Provide support plans and short-term intervention methods of demonstrated effectiveness that are person-led and evidence based to meet the model of care.

Deliver specific types of counselling that have proven to be effective with people from a range of backgrounds.

Provide advocacy to meet their specific needs.

Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary interprofessional team and other relevant stakeholders to promote and facilitate access to primary mental health care services including the provision of support to assist staff to recognise and respond to mental health conditions and provide effective clinical management.

Use adaptive language pertinent to the cohort such as "mental wellbeing" rather than "depression" or "mental illness".

Apply professional judgement within the role, adapting routine wellbeing practice based on valid and reliable evidence for people with complex care needs.

Using a recovery-oriented approach and provide high quality psychosocial supports to people accessing the Centre.

Design, develop, facilitate and evaluate wellbeing/therapeutic groups. Utilise a co-design process to develop groups wherever possible.

Build capacity of people, support partners, teams, and provide appropriate training to support staff.

Provide advice and consultation to a variety of stakeholders.

Commitment to participate in peer groups, multidisciplinary teams and clinical supervision and/or discipline specific supervision.

Requirements:

Tertiary degree qualifications in Social Work.

Current membership to the Australian Associate of Social Workers (AASW) OR eligibility for membership.

Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) Mental Health Accreditation OR working towards accreditation.
